Data Analyst
Marks and Spencer
00:00:05:03 – 00:00:06:02
My name’s Tony.
00:00:06:02 – 00:00:09:22
I work for Castle Donington M&S,
00:00:09:22 – 00:00:14:11
and my role is a data analyst.
00:00:14:13 – 00:00:17:02
Part of our role is to give insights
00:00:17:02 – 00:00:19:15
across the network, look at the transactional data,
00:00:19:15 – 00:00:22:23
monitor performance from an automation
00:00:22:23 – 00:00:24:23
point of view and a colleague point of view.
00:00:24:23 – 00:00:28:12
Basically, performance metrics of both
00:00:28:12 – 00:00:34:21
colleagues, machinery, and flow of stock.
00:00:34:23 – 00:00:38:04
So the skills that are very useful for in our job
00:00:38:04 – 00:00:42:10
is being able to have good written skills.
00:00:42:10 – 00:00:46:14
We do a lot of calculations within SQL code.
00:00:46:14 – 00:00:47:16
To have that high knowledge
00:00:47:16 – 00:00:52:21
of maths is very, very useful.
00:00:52:23 – 00:00:56:04
GCSEs-wise, I didn’t do as well as I wanted to do.
00:00:56:04 – 00:00:59:06
I did enough to get myself
00:00:59:06 – 00:01:01:14
onto my college course to do my sports.
00:01:01:14 – 00:01:04:11
When I left school my goal
00:01:04:11 – 00:01:06:07
was to become a football coach.
00:01:06:07 – 00:01:09:02
And then I needed something that was a little
00:01:09:02 – 00:01:14:13
bit more permanent within work, so I came to M&S
00:01:14:13 – 00:01:18:14
and started as a warehouse operative trainer.
00:01:18:14 – 00:01:20:21
When I came to M&S, they did support my
00:01:20:21 – 00:01:22:19
coaching with Nottingham University,
00:01:22:19 – 00:01:26:17
so I was able to do dual jobs.
00:01:26:17 – 00:01:32:12
But then I opted to drop the university,
00:01:32:12 – 00:01:36:05
and then I ended up moving into
00:01:36:05 – 00:01:39:05
D&D, which is like our project teams,
00:01:39:05 – 00:01:42:10
looking at data regarding the automation,
00:01:42:10 – 00:01:44:06
started to really get a good understanding
00:01:44:06 – 00:01:47:20
of that type of world, and then pushed to
00:01:47:20 – 00:01:51:20
become an analyst within M&S, which I am now.
00:01:51:20 – 00:01:54:19
The first time the role came up and I applied,
00:01:54:19 – 00:01:57:21
I was unsuccessful, but I received feedback
00:01:57:21 – 00:02:00:13
from my interview and what I needed to focus on.
00:02:00:13 – 00:02:03:00
I applied again a couple of months
00:02:03:00 – 00:02:04:06
later when the job come up
00:02:04:06 – 00:02:06:22
to again experience another knockback.
00:02:06:22 – 00:02:13:00
I applied for a similar role after completing
00:02:13:00 – 00:02:17:06
my courses and I received a third knockback.
00:02:17:06 – 00:02:19:20
Took the feedback on board again,
00:02:19:20 – 00:02:21:11
and then I heard about the
00:02:21:11 – 00:02:25:22
M&S Data Fellowship Programme, which I went onto.
00:02:25:22 – 00:02:31:15
A role opened up whilst I was on the programme
00:02:31:15 – 00:02:33:20
which I was put on a secondment.
00:02:33:20 – 00:02:36:09
After completing the course and
00:02:36:09 – 00:02:39:18
getting my level 3 in data and analytics,
00:02:39:18 – 00:02:41:12
my secondment come to an end.
00:02:41:12 – 00:02:45:21
A position had opened up within that team, which I
00:02:45:21 – 00:02:52:02
then was interviewed for and was then successful.
00:02:52:04 – 00:02:54:21
I suppose my advice would be to anyone
00:02:54:21 – 00:02:58:01
that’s interested in data is there are
00:02:58:01 – 00:03:00:06
online courses that you can do,
00:03:00:06 – 00:03:03:03
which you can learn various types of coding language.
After his GCSEs, Tony wanted to become a football coach and took a college course in sports. Seeking a more permanent role, he came to M&S as a warehouse operative trainer before moving to data and automation projects. He then pushed to become an analyst, persevering in response to knockbacks.
