00:00:05:15 – 00:00:06:13
My name’s Miguel.

00:00:06:13 – 00:00:08:04
I am the service manager

00:00:08:04 – 00:00:09:07
and I work at Heathrow Airport.

00:00:12:06 – 00:00:13:17
So what a service manager

00:00:13:17 – 00:00:18:20
does is it involves a lot of problem solving,

00:00:18:20 – 00:00:24:01
a lot of trying to understand how the operations at an airport works

00:00:24:01 – 00:00:26:00
and provide the best service that we can.

00:00:26:00 – 00:00:29:00
A typical day involves office work, admin work.

00:00:29:00 – 00:00:30:17
But my favourite part of my job

00:00:30:17 – 00:00:31:16
is when I get to be in the terminal.

00:00:31:16 – 00:00:33:05
I get to look at security.

00:00:33:05 – 00:00:37:23
I get to look at all of how Heathrow, the airport operates, and I try to problem solve

00:00:37:23 – 00:00:41:17
and I try to see where we’re falling short, where we can improve.

00:00:45:02 – 00:00:46:19
I would say that skills that are very important

00:00:46:19 – 00:00:50:11
for working in my job and in aviation is is definitely communication.

00:00:50:11 – 00:00:53:12
There’s loads of different teams and people

00:00:53:12 – 00:00:57:16
and all sorts of departments that have to work together.

00:00:57:16 – 00:01:00:18
And the way you do that is by communicating and communicating well.

00:01:00:18 – 00:01:03:01
Heathrow is a huge airport.

00:01:03:01 – 00:01:07:03
Lots and lots of work going on behind the scenes, lots of people to work with.

00:01:07:03 – 00:01:09:03
Sometimes it can be overwhelming.

00:01:09:03 – 00:01:13:15
But, it’s important to know that when you do feel overwhelmed,

00:01:13:15 – 00:01:15:18
there are people there to help you and people there to support you.

00:01:19:04 – 00:01:21:02
I really enjoyed my time in school.

00:01:21:02 – 00:01:23:02
For A-levels I did physics,

00:01:23:02 – 00:01:25:23
I did Spanish, and I did economics.

00:01:25:23 – 00:01:29:05
And I went to the University of West London and studied

00:01:29:05 – 00:01:30:11
airline and airport management.

00:01:30:11 – 00:01:33:10
Just before I was going to go to university,

00:01:33:10 – 00:01:37:14
I thought I wanted to do accounting, but, one of my teachers actually

00:01:37:14 – 00:01:41:13
really, really told me to try new things and do work experience.

00:01:41:13 – 00:01:45:18
And one of the work experiences that I signed up to was with British Airways,

00:01:45:18 – 00:01:49:14
and that essentially transformed my life and my career.

00:01:49:14 – 00:01:53:10
If it wasn’t for me trying that work experience, I quite frankly

00:01:53:10 – 00:01:54:22
wouldn’t be in the position I am today.

00:01:57:22 – 00:01:59:12
I remember in my final year, in my third

00:01:59:12 – 00:02:02:23
and final year, the reality hit me that I need a job.

00:02:02:23 – 00:02:06:15
And to my amazement, I managed to get a job at Heathrow Airport.

00:02:06:15 – 00:02:10:07
So my first ever job at Heathrow was a customer host.

00:02:10:07 – 00:02:15:01
So what I started off doing was working at the train stations across

00:02:15:01 – 00:02:19:06
the terminals, making public service announcements and checking tickets.

00:02:19:06 – 00:02:20:17
I spent a lot of time

00:02:20:17 – 00:02:25:18
just learning, most importantly, learning and understanding how the airport works

00:02:25:18 – 00:02:29:19
and who did this and who did that, and applying and applying and applying.

00:02:29:19 – 00:02:32:08
I managed to do three other jobs after that.

00:02:32:08 – 00:02:35:01
Amongst those jobs, many, many rejections,

00:02:35:01 – 00:02:37:18
I didn’t let that deter me,

00:02:37:18 – 00:02:41:06
and just keep applying until I managed to land the job that

00:02:41:06 – 00:02:42:23
I’m doing now, and I’ve been doing this for for two years.

00:02:45:08 – 00:02:49:19
The advice that I would give to anyone out there really is

00:02:49:19 – 00:02:53:02
really just try to find what you enjoy.

00:02:53:02 – 00:02:56:23
Because once you find what you enjoy, things just become a lot more fun.

“I spent a lot of time just learning and understanding how the airport works, and who did this and who did that, and applying and applying and applying.” Following work experience with British Airways, Miguel decided to study airport management instead of accountancy. After university, he got a job as a customer host at Heathrow. Since then, he’s progressed through a number of other roles at the airport.
