00:00:05:03 – 00:00:06:01

My name’s Gemma.

00:00:06:01 – 00:00:08:04

I’m an operation transformation lead,

00:00:08:04 – 00:00:10:08

and I work for Marks and Spencer’s, based at

00:00:10:08 – 00:00:15:18

the Castle Donington Distribution Centre.

00:00:15:20 – 00:00:17:19

Currently, I’m working on transformation

00:00:17:19 – 00:00:20:06

here at Castle Donington which is a

00:00:20:06 – 00:00:24:07

huge expansion of automation on site.

00:00:24:07 – 00:00:32:10

So that involves new picking stations, new packing stations.

00:00:32:12 – 00:00:36:09

My school experience was a bit mixed.

00:00:36:09 – 00:00:37:16

I was very shy.

00:00:37:16 – 00:00:39:16

The world scared me.

00:00:39:16 – 00:00:41:00

I was bullied.

00:00:41:00 – 00:00:43:00

It’s fair to say I wasn’t a natural academic.

00:00:43:00 – 00:00:44:20

Had to go to reading school when I started high school

00:00:44:20 – 00:00:46:21

because I couldn’t read, couldn’t spell.

00:00:46:21 – 00:00:48:16

I just didn’t fit in the classroom.

00:00:48:16 – 00:00:51:02

So I got average grades.

00:00:51:02 – 00:00:53:07

But actually, when I left school, I went to

00:00:53:07 – 00:00:56:20

night school to retake my maths and my English.

00:00:56:20 – 00:01:00:08

And just being in a different environment

00:01:00:08 – 00:01:04:11

with adults was a completely different experience.

00:01:04:11 – 00:01:08:17

I was at college, did small animal care.

00:01:08:17 – 00:01:13:05

I volunteered at the PDSA, and I got offered

00:01:13:05 – 00:01:16:19

an apprenticeship to do veterinary nursing.

00:01:16:19 – 00:01:19:21

And that same week, I had a motorbike accident.

00:01:19:21 – 00:01:23:05

I was in and out hospital, still am,

00:01:23:05 – 00:01:26:17

through many surgeries to rebuild my leg.

00:01:26:17 – 00:01:30:07

So I needed to get a job, a sit-down job.

00:01:30:07 – 00:01:33:23

So I got a job in a call centre for a credit card company.

00:01:33:23 – 00:01:36:16

And went from working as a

00:01:36:16 – 00:01:40:05

call centre operator to managing a call centre

00:01:40:05 – 00:01:42:03

in terms of the distribution of calls.

00:01:42:03 – 00:01:43:19

Thought there must be

00:01:43:19 – 00:01:46:08

something better than this for a

00:01:46:08 – 00:01:49:05

longer career. So I went to a bank

00:01:49:05 – 00:01:52:15

and unfortunately that wasn’t a good move.

00:01:52:15 – 00:01:54:18

So what can I do?

00:01:54:18 – 00:01:56:23

So I trained to become a driving instructor.

00:01:56:23 – 00:01:59:07

To keep the money ticking along,

00:01:59:07 – 00:02:01:21

I got a temporary job as a postwoman

00:02:01:21 – 00:02:04:00

whilst being a driving instructor.

00:02:04:00 – 00:02:05:22

So I ran them side by side.

00:02:05:22 – 00:02:09:10

I got to the point where my leg was too bad,

00:02:09:10 – 00:02:15:14

so I got offered the chance to go on delivery office manager.

00:02:15:14 – 00:02:19:13

Unfortunately, my leg gave up completely, so I

00:02:19:13 – 00:02:22:07

had to retire from working at Royal Mail.

00:02:22:07 – 00:02:23:17

It’s a very physical job, isn’t it?

00:02:23:17 – 00:02:26:19

So then I saw the job at Marks and Spencer’s

00:02:26:19 – 00:02:30:18

for a lead technician within the control room.

00:02:30:18 – 00:02:32:20

The only distribution now was stock,

00:02:32:20 – 00:02:36:15

moving around the warehouse, stock coming out the

00:02:36:15 – 00:02:39:07

warehouse, stock coming in the warehouse, etc.

00:02:39:07 – 00:02:40:12

So I’ve got all the transferrable elements,

00:02:40:12 – 00:02:42:16

but I didn’t know the software.

00:02:42:16 – 00:02:45:00

So I went for the job interview

00:02:45:00 – 00:02:48:19

and they declined me for the job based on the

00:02:48:19 – 00:02:51:13

fact that I didn’t know the software.

00:02:51:13 – 00:02:54:07

So with that, I went home, I researched the

00:02:54:07 – 00:02:57:08

email addresses, remembered the names of the

00:02:57:08 – 00:03:01:08

people that interviewed me, and I wrote to them

00:03:01:08 – 00:03:04:17

and I said what a great interview it was.

00:03:04:17 – 00:03:07:12

I agreed with their reason for declining me,

00:03:07:12 – 00:03:09:18

because they were correct, I didn’t know the system,

00:03:09:18 – 00:03:11:08

but I got all the transferrable elements.

00:03:11:08 – 00:03:14:02

And I said I was that confident that I could learn

00:03:14:02 – 00:03:17:00

the system, they could have me free for a month.

00:03:17:00 – 00:03:20:00

I didn’t get the job that I originally applied for.

00:03:20:00 – 00:03:21:14

They brought me in as sort of like

00:03:21:14 – 00:03:24:22

a base level job to prove myself.

00:03:24:22 – 00:03:28:06

So within 12 months, I’ve got the job that I

00:03:28:06 – 00:03:30:06

originally applied for and was declined for.

00:03:30:06 – 00:03:31:19

And within 18 months, I was then the

00:03:31:19 – 00:03:34:17

shift manager for the control room.

00:03:34:17 – 00:03:37:21

If someone says I can’t do something – no, I can.

00:03:37:21 – 00:03:40:11

So there’s always a way, you’ve just got to find it.

00:03:40:11 – 00:03:42:06

It was that bike accident

00:03:42:06 – 00:03:46:06

that defined who I am and what I am today.

00:03:46:06 – 00:03:50:02

Don’t know what it was inside, but just something

00:03:50:02 – 00:03:52:16

kind of grabbed hold of me and just like,

00:03:52:16 – 00:03:55:14

the only person that’s gonna get over this is me.

00:03:55:14 – 00:03:58:09

And it gave me that drive.

00:03:58:09 – 00:04:04:01

And that drive continues.

00:04:04:03 – 00:04:07:11

By working hard in my 10 years at Castle Donington,

00:04:07:11 – 00:04:10:10

I’ve travelled around so many different

00:04:10:10 – 00:04:12:17

career paths, and gained so much knowledge,

00:04:12:17 – 00:04:15:13

not because I knew what I wanted to do, but because

00:04:15:13 – 00:04:18:11

I worked hard and doors naturally opened.

00:04:18:11 – 00:04:20:19

And I’ve enjoyed every door as it’s opened.

“It was that bike accident that defined who I am and what I am today…it gave me that drive. And that drive continues…there’s always a way, you’ve just got to find it.”

Unable to read or spell when she started high school, Gemma later retook her maths and English at night school, “I just didn’t fit in the classroom…just being in a different environment with adults was a completely different experience.” She was offered a veterinary nursing apprenticeship but in the same week injured her leg in a motorbike accident. Needing a sit-down job, she worked in a call centre. Jobs as a driving instructor, postwoman and delivery office manager followed.

After a good – but unsuccessful – interview at Marks and Spencer’s distribution centre, Gemma sent an email to the interview team and landed a job in the control room. She’s now been at M&S for over 10 years and has continued to progress.

The M&S Castle Donington Distribution Centre sends out orders to online customers and distributes stock to M&S stores.
