Quality Technician
Marks and Spencer
00:00:04:23 – 00:00:05:19
I’m Ewan.
00:00:05:19 – 00:00:08:22
I’m a quality technician at Marks and Spencer’s
00:00:08:22 – 00:00:14:09
distribution centre in Castle Donington.
00:00:14:11 – 00:00:18:17
We deal with outbound, dispatching,
00:00:18:17 – 00:00:20:05
checking to make sure that things have
00:00:20:05 – 00:00:22:06
been packed correctly, making sure that
00:00:22:06 – 00:00:24:19
customers will be happy with their orders.
00:00:24:19 – 00:00:27:21
It can be website-based issues as well.
00:00:27:21 – 00:00:29:13
But there’s also a side
00:00:29:13 – 00:00:30:22
that’s more colleague-facing.
00:00:30:22 – 00:00:33:23
So I have to go out and do
00:00:33:23 – 00:00:35:18
what’s known as a process audit.
00:00:35:18 – 00:00:38:22
So we have a check board of criteria
00:00:38:22 – 00:00:41:15
that colleagues are trained off, and we go
00:00:41:15 – 00:00:46:12
down and make sure they’re following that.
00:00:46:14 – 00:00:49:20
Of course, people skills are a giant part of this job,
00:00:49:20 – 00:00:53:02
both in just being welcoming and friendly,
00:00:53:02 – 00:00:55:12
whatever you’re discussing,
00:00:55:12 – 00:00:55:22
but also on the level of being able to
00:00:55:22 – 00:00:59:20
but also on the level of being able to
00:00:59:20 – 00:01:02:02
confront people where necessary.
00:01:02:02 – 00:01:04:20
So there is like a basic level of IT to our work.
00:01:04:20 – 00:01:06:13
It’s things that you can pick up quickly,
00:01:06:13 – 00:01:07:19
but coming in with a little
00:01:07:19 – 00:01:13:04
bit of knowledge is always beneficial.
00:01:13:06 – 00:01:14:04
It was a mixed bag at school for me.
00:01:14:04 – 00:01:15:19
I didn’t dislike school.
00:01:15:19 – 00:01:18:11
I wasn’t someone that hated going to school,
00:01:18:11 – 00:01:20:09
but I just had my ups and downs.
00:01:20:09 – 00:01:22:09
None of my subjects really actually
00:01:22:09 – 00:01:24:12
necessarily led to where I’m at.
00:01:24:12 – 00:01:26:22
I mean, I was an arts person.
00:01:26:22 – 00:01:29:09
I was doing drama, I was doing music.
00:01:29:09 – 00:01:31:00
For this sort of thing, we do
00:01:31:00 – 00:01:33:00
deal with, as I say, data sets.
00:01:33:00 – 00:01:34:12
numbers and percentages and stuff.
00:01:34:12 – 00:01:38:09
So being able to do very quick,
00:01:38:09 – 00:01:41:13
figures and figure out percentages and
00:01:41:13 – 00:01:44:15
splits and stuff is always very useful.
00:01:44:15 – 00:01:49:12
I did okay at GCSEs, minus my maths,
00:01:49:12 – 00:01:51:19
but you could take a resit alongside.
00:01:51:19 – 00:01:55:12
But I got just… I got enough to get onto
00:01:55:12 – 00:01:56:17
the college course I was doing which
00:01:56:17 – 00:01:58:07
was actually video game development.
00:01:58:07 – 00:02:00:18
Though I then did only a year
00:02:00:18 – 00:02:02:15
of the video game development course,
00:02:02:15 – 00:02:05:05
I just kind of decided it
00:02:05:05 – 00:02:07:17
was not gonna be for me for the second year.
00:02:07:17 – 00:02:11:04
And so, I went into just doing a work skills course
00:02:11:04 – 00:02:15:18
and then just went straight into work.
00:02:15:20 – 00:02:18:03
I went to Bombardier actually
00:02:18:03 – 00:02:20:21
to do electrical engineering on trains.
00:02:20:21 – 00:02:22:02
But there were certain things I
00:02:22:02 – 00:02:24:18
just wasn’t getting on with on-site.
00:02:24:18 – 00:02:28:11
I left and I started as an agency worker
00:02:28:11 – 00:02:31:03
here as a trailer tipper.
00:02:31:03 – 00:02:34:03
I was unloading stock sent
00:02:34:03 – 00:02:35:19
from suppliers onto site.
00:02:35:19 – 00:02:39:00
So I started there, slowly moved around the warehouse,
00:02:39:00 – 00:02:43:02
doing packing, working a little
00:02:43:02 – 00:02:46:06
bit on the outbound dispatching side of things.
00:02:46:06 – 00:02:48:16
I went into parcel checking after
00:02:48:16 – 00:02:51:11
a year of… no, two years of that.
00:02:51:11 – 00:02:55:14
And then from the parcel checking team, I
00:02:55:14 – 00:03:01:06
moved up now to where I am two years ago.
00:03:01:08 – 00:03:05:23
My dad was a big push for me.
00:03:05:23 – 00:03:11:08
After all of the college stuff, I was obviously
00:03:11:08 – 00:03:14:11
quite all over the place with where I was going
00:03:14:11 – 00:03:19:11
and he just said, “Get a job and
00:03:19:11 – 00:03:22:04
use that as a springboard to go further.
00:03:22:04 – 00:03:26:02
Once you have a job, you’ll be able to get
00:03:26:02 – 00:03:28:12
other ones easier, not just because it looks
00:03:28:12 – 00:03:30:22
good to have a job but because you’ll want to
00:03:30:22 – 00:03:33:10
have a job, because you have money, you have
00:03:33:10 – 00:03:35:07
a little bit of freedom, you have a schedule.
00:03:35:07 – 00:03:36:22
You’ll get used to that sort of thing.”
00:03:36:22 – 00:03:39:01
And so he kind of really pushed me on that front.
“I was obviously quite all over the place with where I was going.” Ewan took a while to find a path that suited him. Following his GCSEs, he started a college course in video game development but after a year decided was not for him. Taking his dad’s advice to get a job and use that as a springboard to go further, he started an electrical engineering role but that didn’t suit him either. His next move was to take an agency job at M&S which led to his current role. He now helps send out orders to online customers and distribute stock to M&S stores.
