Real-life career videos and ideas for your future
00:00:08:01 – 00:00:08:23
My name is Denise.
00:00:08:23 – 00:00:13:16
I work in West London at a company called Suntory Beverage.
00:00:13:17 – 00:00:17:09
I’m an internal communication executive, so I work in the HR department.
00:00:17:18 – 00:00:23:24
I would just say we are a global company that produces really popular drinks,
00:00:24:06 – 00:00:25:23
so Lucozade,
00:00:26:06 – 00:00:28:08
Orangina, Schweppes.
00:00:29:18 – 00:00:31:22
My day-to-day includes creating content
00:00:31:22 – 00:00:35:06
for my company, which includes
00:00:35:21 – 00:00:39:18
making posters or newsletters, putting it on
00:00:40:18 – 00:00:43:13
the TVs in our office and sending
00:00:43:13 – 00:00:46:19
emails to everyone, including the CEO, which is pretty cool.
00:00:47:06 – 00:00:49:16
I can also work with the PAs,
00:00:49:16 – 00:00:53:06
which is personal assistants for like parties for employees,
00:00:53:18 – 00:00:56:19
and I also contribute to the wider
00:00:56:20 – 00:00:59:00
European region with those tasks.
00:01:00:14 – 00:01:03:03
Strengths would be writing, for sure,
00:01:03:03 – 00:01:06:10
creativity, being agile as well
00:01:06:11 – 00:01:10:07
is very important. Being a people person, so speaking to different people,
00:01:10:19 – 00:01:13:02
people who are higher up as well, communicating
00:01:13:02 – 00:01:14:22
with them or their personal assistants.
00:01:14:22 – 00:01:18:14
And I think also being able to take criticism.
00:01:19:07 – 00:01:20:12
I think that’s very important.
00:01:22:07 – 00:01:24:11
I really enjoyed the creative side of school.
00:01:24:11 – 00:01:27:22
So like PE, drama – best in the business.
00:01:28:07 – 00:01:32:03
English and maths, I was very bad at, but I didn’t know
00:01:32:03 – 00:01:35:11
I was bad at it until I found out I had dyslexia
00:01:35:11 – 00:01:39:10
and that’s why I struggled so much and I just thought that I wouldn’t need it.
00:01:39:10 – 00:01:41:11
So I didn’t really pay attention
00:01:41:11 – 00:01:45:02
until I started working and I realised how important it is.
00:01:45:09 – 00:01:50:07
GCSEs I really did not like it and I think it’s because I struggled
00:01:50:07 – 00:01:55:04
with reading and writing, so I just made up excuses.
00:01:55:04 – 00:01:58:07
I just said, ‘I do want to do it,’ or I just felt very overwhelmed.
00:01:58:07 – 00:02:02:03
And I think that’s what made it very hard for me to get the grades that I thought
00:02:02:03 – 00:02:04:05
I was going to get – that I prayed for, that I didn’t get.
00:02:04:15 – 00:02:09:02
But I wish that I was more vocal about me struggling in school as well.
00:02:10:12 – 00:02:11:17
I chose drama, I chose business, I chose
00:02:11:17 – 00:02:16:01
Spanish and I had to do science, maths and English.
00:02:16:08 – 00:02:19:18
I didn’t think Spanish would be useful, but it really is.
00:02:20:03 – 00:02:24:20
So I work in a European team and I translate English into Spanish
00:02:24:20 – 00:02:29:03
and French, and I wish I paid attention more in Spanish
00:02:30:08 – 00:02:32:03
because now I’m learning Spanish with my team
00:02:32:03 – 00:02:34:11
so it makes like work a lot easier.
00:02:34:16 – 00:02:37:23
I studied BTEC business level three extended diploma,
00:02:38:16 – 00:02:40:07
which is worth three A-levels,
00:02:40:07 – 00:02:43:11
and then after that I went to a digital marketing apprenticeship.
00:02:43:19 – 00:02:47:23
I got help when I became an apprentice and my apprenticeship done
00:02:47:23 – 00:02:49:11
an exam for everyone
00:02:49:11 – 00:02:52:23
and you found out how you can learn what are your strengths, what your weaknesses are.
00:02:53:07 – 00:02:58:04
And that’s how I found out that my weaknesses were in writing and reading.
00:02:58:22 – 00:03:03:20
I’m a very visual learner, so colours big text and pictures.
00:03:03:20 – 00:03:08:02
And then I found out that I was dyslexic, so it made sense.
00:03:08:07 – 00:03:11:08
Only when I’m 21, but it still made sense.
00:03:12:24 – 00:03:14:24
When I finished college, I was so excited –
00:03:14:24 – 00:03:18:17
I got offered an apprenticeship at digital marketing with Mindshare,
00:03:19:01 – 00:03:25:01
and Covid came and I got into retail because it got postponed for six months,
00:03:25:10 – 00:03:29:00
and after the six months was done, I went to be an apprentice –
00:03:29:00 – 00:03:32:01
digital marketing at a media agency
00:03:32:01 – 00:03:34:01
and that was really, that was really good.
00:03:34:16 – 00:03:38:19
And then through my apprenticeship, I met another company
00:03:38:19 – 00:03:41:16
called Asperination, and then I met Lucozade.
00:03:42:02 – 00:03:44:10
So jump, jump, jump.
00:03:45:23 – 00:03:50:05
My advice to young people would be to network
00:03:50:21 – 00:03:52:24
because that’s how I got all my opportunities
00:03:53:07 – 00:03:57:20
and don’t be disheartened if you don’t always get your first option.
00:03:58:01 – 00:03:59:01
I feel like
00:03:59:01 – 00:04:01:10
we’re so set on – this is my A-plan,
00:04:01:10 – 00:04:03:23
this is my Z-plan – that
00:04:03:23 – 00:04:09:06
you can miss opportunities by just focusing on one set plan all the time.
