Real-life career videos and ideas for your future
00:00:07:00 – 00:00:08:04
Hi. My name’s Abby, and
00:00:08:04 – 00:00:10:10
I’m one of the photographers for the Red Arrows.
00:00:11:04 – 00:00:14:12
My job involves taking imagery to post on social media.
00:00:15:18 – 00:00:18:02
We also do the safety filming
00:00:18:04 – 00:00:20:09
for when they practice the displays.
00:00:21:03 – 00:00:25:06
And another special thing about our role is we get to sit in the back of the jet
00:00:25:06 – 00:00:27:23
for the season and capture imagery from the air.
00:00:29:18 – 00:00:32:16
So at school I took the normal GCSEs.
00:00:33:00 – 00:00:35:16
I also took media studies and travel and tourism.
00:00:36:01 – 00:00:37:11
I then went on to sixth form
00:00:37:11 – 00:00:40:19
and also studied media studies and health and social care.
00:00:41:07 – 00:00:45:10
I then realized I didn’t actually like it as much as I thought,
00:00:45:10 – 00:00:47:11
so I left after a year.
00:00:47:11 – 00:00:49:00
I then had a year out
00:00:49:00 – 00:00:51:15
searching for every job you can imagine.
00:00:52:05 – 00:00:53:19
I really struggled with this.
00:00:53:19 – 00:00:56:17
I basically ended up getting a Friday job at a cake shop
00:00:57:09 – 00:00:59:21
and then I started researching about photography jobs
00:01:00:21 – 00:01:01:14
because I’ve always been
00:01:01:14 – 00:01:04:05
interested in photography.
00:01:04:17 – 00:01:06:08
One aspect was wildlife photography, but
00:01:06:08 – 00:01:09:15
you need so many qualifications, it’s very competitive.
00:01:09:17 – 00:01:13:19
So – done a bit of research and the photography
00:01:13:19 – 00:01:16:23
in the Air Force came up – basically applied
00:01:16:23 – 00:01:18:08
and now I’m here.
00:01:20:01 – 00:01:22:17
So after doing my basic training, trade training,
00:01:23:03 – 00:01:25:04
I was posted to RAF Wittering
00:01:26:02 – 00:01:29:15
for about two years and then to Brize Norton,
00:01:29:15 – 00:01:33:17
which was more of a trials unit doing technical photography.
00:01:34:06 – 00:01:38:07
And then I was posted to RAF Scampton with the Red Arrows
00:01:39:01 – 00:01:43:02
and this is more of a public relations type role.
00:01:43:15 – 00:01:47:21
The turning point for me was when I joined the military, I wasn’t
00:01:47:21 – 00:01:49:23
in the mindset that I wanted to travel, but
00:01:51:04 – 00:01:53:21
later down the line
00:01:53:21 – 00:01:57:08
I realized, actually, I want to make the most of the military
00:01:57:08 – 00:02:00:17
whilst I’m in and I want to take advantage of all the opportunities they had.
00:02:01:03 – 00:02:03:06
And I’ve actually been really lucky.
00:02:03:07 – 00:02:05:23
So when I was at Brize Norton, I got to travel to America
00:02:05:23 – 00:02:09:08
quite a few times and I took advantage of
00:02:10:01 – 00:02:12:16
doing a ski expedition to Germany.
00:02:13:00 – 00:02:14:15
And now I’m in the Red Arrows. It’s
00:02:15:23 – 00:02:17:01
it is very busy with
00:02:17:01 – 00:02:19:13
travel and actually it’s
00:02:20:01 – 00:02:22:10
probably the best post I will get whilst I’m in the military. So
00:02:23:14 – 00:02:25:13
I’m eagerly going to make the most of it
00:02:25:13 – 00:02:28:03
while some here and enjoy the travel I get.
00:02:30:02 – 00:02:34:16
In my role it’s important to have good teamwork skills – leadership skills
00:02:34:16 – 00:02:35:15
is also very important
00:02:35:15 – 00:02:39:05
because you need to be able to tell people where to stand, what to do.
00:02:39:10 – 00:02:44:17
You have to be able to make them feel confident and comfortable in the situation
00:02:44:17 – 00:02:47:04
of taking their photos or videoing them.
00:02:48:18 – 00:02:53:09
If I was to give myself any advice to my younger self, I would tell myself
00:02:53:09 – 00:02:57:21
not to overthink, because over the years you will make plenty of mistakes.
00:02:57:21 – 00:03:01:22
But these mistakes make you who you are and get you to a point in life
00:03:02:03 – 00:03:02:22
where you’re meant to be.
00:03:03:22 – 00:03:07:00
So try not to beat yourself up because
00:03:07:00 – 00:03:08:21
we’re only human and we will make mistakes.
00:03:08:21 – 00:03:13:06
So just try and plan and prep yourself as much as possible for every situation.
00:03:13:06 – 00:03:14:19
And you can only do your best.
